The Ministry of Sustainability and Environment of the Junta de Andalucía has published a resolution with exceptional hunting measures to control wild rabbit populations in 141 municipalities, 34 of them in the province of Jaén, due to the damage they cause to crops.

The Junta de Andalucía, through the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment, has published a resolution in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA) establishing extraordinary hunting measures. The objective is to control wild rabbit populations and mitigate the damage they cause to crops and agricultural infrastructure. This measure affects a total of 141 municipalities spread across the provinces of Granada, Jaén, Málaga, and Sevilla, with 34 of them located in the province of Jaén.
The decision responds to the significant localized increase in the species in certain areas, particularly in hunting zones such as the Guadalquivir Valley, the Subbetic Foothills, and the Depression of Granada. In these regions, agricultural damage has seen a notable rise recently. Holders of hunting grounds that have included rabbit damage control in their technical plans and whose lands fall within the scope of the resolution will be eligible for these new provisions.
Regarding authorized methods and periods, live capture using ferrets and nets will be permitted throughout the entire 2026-2027 hunting season. For hunting with firearms, the open season is extended from November 30, 2026, to February 28, 2027. However, in some municipalities in Granada, Jaén, and Sevilla, capture will only be allowed with ferrets and nets, with Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays being open days. Generally, a maximum of five hunters will be allowed per 250 hectares per day, with the possibility of adding two more hunters for every fraction of 100 hectares.
The use of dogs for hunting will be permitted from November 30, 2026, to January 31, 2027, with a limit of three dogs per hunter. In the case of falconry, the period coincides with that for firearms, allowing the use of all birds suitable for the prey and declaring all days as open.
Captured rabbits may be used for personal consumption, transferred to areas within the same hunting ground away from damage-affected zones, or used for restocking other hunting grounds. These actions will require a favorable report from the relevant Territorial Delegation and compliance with animal health and game species transport regulations. Holders of hunting grounds applying these measures must detail the results obtained in their annual report, including the methods used, the number of hunters, and the specimens captured.
