The prestigious production of 'Otello' from the Salzburg Easter Festival, described as a "triumph of aesthetics and drama," will be screened in Huelva at the Artesiete Holea cinemas next Thursday, August 6th. The opera, also showing in over 50 theaters across Spain, is part of the óh!pera Summer cultural initiative, presenting essential lyric works filmed in impressive open-air settings.
Under the musical direction of maestro Christian Thielemann and performed by the Staatskapelle Dresden, this rendition of Verdi's score navigates from volcanic violence to chamber delicacy. Vincent Boussard's staging is stylized and symbolic, integrating video, lighting, and scenography to create an almost abstract environment that contrasts with the libretto's emotional brutality.
The spectacular costumes, designed by fashion icon Christian Lacroix, add a sophisticated elegance. The international cast features Argentine tenor José Cura as Otello, German soprano Dorothea Röschmann as Desdemona, and the Malaga-born baritone Carlos Álvarez, who delivers a "masterful lesson in villainy" as Iago.
The opera recounts the tragedy of General Otello, who, manipulated by his ensign Iago, becomes consumed by jealousy and distrust towards his wife Desdemona, leading to a tragic end. This 147-minute performance, sung in Italian, is part of the fourth edition of the óh!pera Summer festival, aiming to make opera more accessible and spectacular through multi-camera filming.
Following 'Otello', the festival will continue with 'Andrea Chénier' on August 20th, 'Carmen' on September 3rd, and 'Nabucco' on September 17th, featuring productions from festivals such as Bregenz and the Arena di Verona.
