Improvement works are focused on the Jardines del Muelle, popularly known as Parque de las Palomas, in the capital of Huelva. The actions include the restoration of existing play equipment, the renovation of the perimeter fencing, and the installation of artificial grass paving for greater safety and comfort for users.
In addition to modernizing the play spaces, the intervention in the Jardines del Muelle includes the cleaning of the sculpture of Alonso Sánchez, a prominent work by the sculptor Antonio León Ortega. This project is part of a broader initiative for the remodeling and refurbishment of children's areas throughout the city.
The first phase of this plan, which began in mid-January, covers a total of fifteen children's playgrounds located in different parts of the city. Among the areas benefiting are the children's areas of El Molino (on Costa de la Luz Avenue), Santa Marta Avenue, Camino del Saladillo, and Parque Robinson. Repairs will also be carried out on the boulevard of Andalucía Avenue, the Parque Moret neighborhood, Plaza de los Dolores, Pescadores Street in La Orden, Plaza Paco Toronjo, Plaza del Andévalo in Los Rosales, Martín Pescador Street in Cardeñas, Federico Mayo Avenue, and the parkour area of Parque Moret. The estimated execution period for this first stage is three months.
Taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, improvement and cleaning works are also being carried out on other sculptures located in public spaces in Huelva. In the central Plaza de San Pedro, the letters on the base of the monument to Archpriest Manuel González García, a work by Víctor de los Ríos inaugurated in May 1961, have been cleaned. The sculpture has maintained its original location after the recent remodeling of the square. Manuel González García was canonized in October 2016 by Pope Francis.
