With the imminent start of the school year, Granada City Council has given top priority to the inspection and repair of damages in educational centers. This measure affects the four municipal nursery schools and the 38 public schools in the city.
Municipal technicians have confirmed that none of the centers present structural damage. Nevertheless, repairs are being carried out on the detected damages to minimize any impact on the return to classrooms, scheduled for September 1st for the first cycle of early childhood education.
The mayor, Marifrán Carazo, accompanied by council members, visited the Duende Nursery School, which suffered the most significant incidents. Belén and Luna experienced minor damages, and Arlequín registered no incidents.
These tasks are in addition to the annual improvement and maintenance program carried out each summer in the nursery schools to optimize their facilities for the new academic year.
“"The most important thing is that the technicians have inspected the four schools and confirmed that the damages do not affect their structure. We can reassure families because we are working to ensure the school year begins normally and with all guarantees."
The improvement and maintenance plan for the Municipal Nursery Schools has an investment of 40,000 euros for the 2026/2027 academic year. The cost of repairs due to the seismic events, whose amount is still being assessed, will be added to this figure.
Specific interventions include the installation of artificial turf and floor renovation in Arlequín, ramp and climbing wall improvements in Belén, a new cover for strollers in Luna, and window replacement and roof repair in Duende.
Furthermore, five new air conditioning units with heating and cooling systems have been installed throughout the course. "We are repairing the damages caused by the earthquakes and, at the same time, moving forward with the improvements we had already planned for this summer. We want children to find well-maintained, renovated, and prepared schools when they return to the classrooms," stated Carazo.
The municipal summer program also includes comprehensive painting, cleaning, and disinfection of classrooms, playgrounds, and furniture, as well as textile treatment and deep cleaning of toys and kitchens, ensuring full preparation before students return.
The mayor highlighted the City Council's commitment to the continuous improvement of nursery schools and the quality of service provided to the families of Granada.
