The transformation of the former Mercado del Carmen site in Huelva is progressing with the construction of an underground parking garage offering 280 spaces. This infrastructure, spanning 10,714 square meters, aims to enhance the appearance and traffic flow in a central area of the Huelva capital.
Of the total spaces, 37 will be reserved for residents, with the remainder available for public use. The material execution budget amounts to 5.98 million euros. The underground structure will serve as the foundation for the new public square, reclaiming the space for pedestrians.
Construction work, which began on May 18th, is currently focused on the deep foundation and perimeter containment, with diaphragm walls being a key element. The process has involved removing pavements, site surveys, coordinating urban services, and rerouting electrical and telecommunication networks.
Continuous archaeological monitoring has been in place since May 25th. By the end of July, structural walls, pavement preparations, and remnants of the old market, along with pipelines, had been uncovered. The water table has been noted at approximately one meter depth in certain areas.
As of July 31st, work was concentrated on the diaphragm walls of the east facade and the alignment of pillars. The next phase will involve completing diaphragm walls and piles, constructing the upper slab, and phased excavation, before proceeding to the internal structure, ramps, and finishes.
The project is set to introduce 280 parking spots in the heart of Huelva while reclaiming a central city area as public space on the surface.
