In the northernmost part of the province of Huelva, bordering Extremadura, lies Hinojales, a small village seemingly untouched by the fast pace of modern life. Surrounded by mountains, trails, and green landscapes, this destination invites calm and disconnection, attracting those seeking nature, authenticity, and silence.
With a population of around 300 inhabitants, this mountain town retains an atmosphere difficult to find elsewhere. Its privileged natural environment, pure air, and a profound sense of calm evoke images of European mountain villages. The comparison to the Swiss Alps arises from its combination of mountains, abundant vegetation, and constructions integrated into the landscape, creating a sense of natural refuge where the scenery is the true protagonist.
Hinojales boasts an extensive network of trails that allow exploration of sites such as the Camino Maragatos, Cerro del Gordo, Cueva del Moro, and the Rivera, a tributary of the Ribera de Huelva. These routes are ideal for enjoying the characteristic flora and fauna of the Sierra de Huelva.
The municipality also holds significant historical heritage, including its amphitheater, bullring, and the Fuente del Concejo. Notably, the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación features 15th and 16th-century mural paintings, and the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Tórtola, both declared Assets of Cultural Interest.
The traditions of Hinojales are equally rich, with the Lanza dance, possibly of Celtic origin, standing out. It is performed on April 30th and in August during the procession of the Virgen de la Tórtola between her hermitage and the parish church, a unique cultural manifestation in the Sierra de Huelva.
