This event, considered one of the most significant in cruiser-racer sailing, places the province of Huelva on the international stage. The competition, part of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week, takes place between May 5 and 14 and includes both coastal races and the historic Regata dei Tre Golfi, an offshore traverse of approximately 150 nautical miles.
The team from Huelva arrives at this event after a solid track record in the Copa del Rey de Vela, where they have achieved several podium finishes. The crew approaches the World Championship with over a decade of experience at the national elite level, aiming to compete at the highest level and represent Huelva in this demanding environment.
The Diputación de Huelva-De6 boat is the sole Andalusian representative and one of the few Spanish crews present in Sorrento, which highlights the sporting and institutional value of their participation. The Offshore Racing Congress (ORC), the international governing body for cruiser-racer sailing, considers this championship the global benchmark for the ORC International class.
In the first scoring race, a challenging 120-nautical-mile offshore coastal regatta, the Diputación de Huelva-De6 achieved a commendable tenth place among 54 entries. This result is particularly noteworthy, as long-distance offshore races are the discipline in which the team admits to feeling less comfortable.
The Huelva crew maintained a competitive pace throughout the race, demonstrating tactical solidity and adaptability against some of the best international teams. This initial contact has also allowed the team to analyze the level of their main competitors, crucial information for upcoming technical races. The athletes from Huelva are hopeful and excited about their chances of contending for the international trophy.
