The conference, titled 'The Training of Surgeons in the Carrera de Indias. The Royal College of Surgery of Cadiz,' will take place at 7:00 PM in the auditorium of the José Luis García Palacios Cultural Center of the Fundación Caja Rural del Sur. The event is jointly organized by the Ibero-American Academy of La Rábida and the Official College of Physicians of Huelva.
María Dolores Lazo López, a full academician of the Ibero-American Academy of La Rábida, will introduce the speaker. The presentation will be based on documentation from the Royal College of Surgery's archives, spanning from 1728 to 1844, which are held at the Historical Archive of the UCA.
The Royal College of Surgery of Cadiz, established to train surgeons for warships, Navy hospitals, and merchant ships, played a crucial role in the professionalization and advancement of surgery in Spain. An order from 1748 mandated the presence of surgeons trained at this college on merchant vessels, significantly driving medical progress in the country.
“"The presentation focuses on an institution that renewed, dignified, and professionalized military naval surgery and general surgery."
Clemencia de la Cruz Rodríguez has prior experience giving lectures on naval surgery and civil health, having presented at events such as the Days of History of Nursing in Cadiz in April 2023 and for the anniversary of the Royal College of Surgery of the Navy of Cadiz in September 2023.
