The municipality of Soportújar, in the Granada Alpujarra, has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its peculiar history linked to witchcraft, offering a magical experience to its visitors.

Known as the «witch town» of the Alpujarra, Soportújar has successfully transformed its ancient legends into a tourist attraction. The mystical atmosphere is palpable from the outset, with winding roads and a landscape that invites imagination.
The origin of this nickname dates back to the 16th century, when the expulsion of the Moors brought new settlers from northern Spain. These newcomers, with their pagan traditions, aroused suspicion among local inhabitants, leading to several women being investigated for witchcraft in the area. Other theories suggest the name comes from remedies and cosmetics made with herbs and spices by locals.
Since the first Witch Fair in 2009, the town has fully embraced this identity, using it to enchant tourists. Upon arrival, visitors can find parking near the Cueva del Ojo de la Bruja (Witch's Eye Cave), a place where, according to legend, an old sorcerer concocted his potions. Inside, it recreates how witches might have lived, with numerous details that transport visitors to the past.
The tour through Soportújar is dotted with fantastic installations, such as a statue of an old woman with warts and horns representing Baba Yaga, or Hansel and Gretel's cottage, a colorful dwelling covered in sweets that contrasts with the white of Andalusian houses. Also noteworthy are the Witch's Fountain and the cauldron statue at the Mirador del Embrujo (Enchantment Viewpoint).
The Witchcraft Museum, with an entry fee of 3 euros, offers an overview of the global history of witchcraft and its symbolism, including explanations of local folklore. Although designed for children, its setting with dangling spiders, hooded figures, and eerie music creates an immersive atmosphere that prepares visitors to explore the rest of the town.
Even the town's bars and restaurants have joined the theme, offering menus with «bewitching» touches. Soportújar is an ideal destination for families with children or for those who wish to connect with their more imaginative side, and it is recommended to combine the visit with other nearby towns such as Pampaneira or Trevelez.
