A seismic event of magnitude 5.0, with its epicenter in Alhendín (Granada), was recorded early Saturday morning, being strongly felt in the province of Malaga and triggering an emergency phase.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded a magnitude 5.0 earthquake, with its epicenter in the Granada town of Alhendín, which was strongly felt across the province of Malaga during the early hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026. The tremor, occurring at 1:04 AM and at a depth of between 2 and 10 kilometers, led to the activation of emergency phase operational level 1 of the Junta de Andalucía's Seismic Risk Plan.
The shockwave was clearly perceived in numerous locations within the province of Malaga, including coastal towns like Fuengirola, Torremolinos, and Estepona, as well as in the Axarquía region (Nerja, Vélez-Málaga, and Rincón de la Victoria) and inland areas. Many residents were awakened by the prolonged shaking.
Granada and its metropolitan area experienced a total of 40 tremors throughout the early morning, in addition to the main one from Alhendín. These seismic events have resulted in material damage, although no injuries have been reported.
The Junta de Andalucía maintains the emergency phase, operational level 1, of the Seismic Risk Plan active, facilitating the monitoring and coordination of resources and necessary actions. Civil Protection and emergency services have not reported any casualties, but the ongoing tremors prompted many residents in the Granada metropolitan area to leave their homes and gather in parks and other open spaces.
The provincial administration, in coordination with the Provincial Council of Granada and local municipalities, will conduct a review of damaged buildings throughout Saturday to assess potential structural issues. The day is also expected to be marked by forecasts of storms and rain.
