This surprise homage to the Olympic medalist took place at a venue she herself describes as her "second home". María Pérez underscored the importance of providing young people from Granada with opportunities to pursue their sports careers without having to leave their hometown.
“"I haven't left Granada to achieve what I have. One can achieve the maximum possible by being happy at home, and I am fortunate that almost my entire team is from Granada. I feel privileged."
The athlete, who already has a school in Orce and the Bola de Oro sports center named after her, expressed her gratitude and, laughing, commented that "having a track was the last thing I needed." She also acknowledged the "responsibility" she feels to be a "good example for society as a whole."
The Minister of Sport for the Junta de Andalucía, Patricia del Pozo, described the event as an "ambush" to surprise the athlete. Del Pozo highlighted that the plaque bearing María Pérez's name will serve as an "inspiration" for the children who train there, stating, "we wanted that to remain here forever."
“"We wanted to give this surprise to one of the best athletes we have in the world."
The minister also thanked Jacinto Garzón, María Pérez's coach, for his complicity in organizing the tribute. The event was also attended by the Mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo; the delegate of the Junta in the province, Antonio Granados; and the Minister of Public Works, Rocío Díaz, all of whom celebrated the athlete's achievements and values.
