The population from Granada residing abroad has seen a significant 4.3% increase over the past year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), far exceeding the national average.

While demographic growth within the province of Granada remains moderate, the number of Granadians living outside Spain is on a clear upward trend. The latest update to the Register of Spanish Residents Abroad, dated January 1, 2026, indicates that 67,860 individuals registered in the province are now spread across the globe. This 4.3% rise contrasts sharply with the 0.6% increase recorded in the provincial census of 2025, which counted 945,797 people.
In the capital city, Granada, growth has also been slower, with a 0.7% increase and a total of 235,294 registered residents. This subdued pace within the territory stands in contrast to the dynamic expansion of the foreign population. Only the municipality of Motril, with 60,160 inhabitants, surpasses the absolute figures of Granadians living abroad.
By country, Argentina solidifies its position as the primary destination for Granadians, hosting 22,524 people at the start of the year, representing an increase of over 8% compared to 2025. This figure is only surpassed by five localities within the province, including Almuñécar and Las Gabias. Brazil ranks second with nearly 11,000 registered individuals; if this community were a municipality, it would be the twentieth most populated in the province.
These two Latin American countries account for almost 50% of all Granadians residing abroad. In Europe, France has the largest presence, with 8,407 people, followed by Germany (5,301), the United Kingdom (2,855), and Switzerland (2,848). Notably, the United Kingdom saw a 3% increase in the last year and an impressive 79.4% over the past decade, set against the backdrop of Brexit.
In the Gulf region, the United Arab Emirates is home to 133 Granadians, with an increase of over 12% in one year. Other countries in the area, such as Qatar (29 Granadians) and Saudi Arabia (47), also have a Granadian presence. The INE does not provide data on residents in Iran due to statistical secrecy. An interesting anecdote is the 700% surge in Granadians in Pakistan, rising from two to sixteen in twelve months.
At the Andalusian level, Granada is the second province with the highest number of residents abroad, trailing only Málaga (85,221) and ahead of Almería (58,063). However, Almería and Málaga show higher annual growth rates (5.1% and 6.05% respectively), surpassing the regional average of 4.4% and Granada's 4.3%. Over the last decade, Granada also falls below the Andalusian average for growth in its population abroad.
