The city of Granada and its surroundings have experienced a night of considerable seismic activity. The main tremor, registered shortly after 1 AM, reached a magnitude of 5 and was felt across much of Andalusia, even reaching as far as Madrid. This event was followed by 34 aftershocks located in municipalities such as Loja, Armilla, Churriana de la Vega, Ogíjares, Dílar, La Zubia, Otura, and Alhendín. One of the most superficial aftershocks, measuring 3.3 degrees, occurred in Gójar at 6:34 AM.
Although widespread panic was not generated, hundreds of people chose to leave their homes after the initial tremor and gathered in public squares. The 112 emergency service received approximately 200 calls, and the firefighters of Granada received about a hundred. Authorities have confirmed no personal injuries have been reported.
However, cracks and falling cornices have been reported. In response, the 112 service has issued recommendations to avoid unnecessary entry or exit from buildings and to stay clear of facades, cornices, balconies, and any elements that could detach.
The Minister of Emergencies for the Junta de Andalucía, Antonio Sanz, announced the activation of the emergency phase, operational situation 1, of the Seismic Risk Plan. This measure allows for enhanced monitoring and coordination of resources and actions with the Provincial Council and affected town councils, particularly concerning potential damage to homes and buildings.
Firefighters and police are inspecting and cordoning off areas with the most significant damage to prevent transit and mitigate further risks. The public has been urged to respect the signage and avoid approaching affected zones. The Volunteer Architects Group of Andalusia has been mobilized to assess building damage, and the Junta maintains ongoing contact with the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics.
