Of these seismic events, 13 were perceived by the population, although none were felt in the province of Cordoba. The strongest aftershock reached a magnitude of 3.3 and occurred approximately five hours after the initial tremor.
The IGN specified that the main earthquake occurred at 1:04:40 AM peninsular time, with a magnitude of 4.8. Its epicenter was located northeast of Alhendín, in Granada, about eight kilometers southwest of Granada city. All aftershocks have occurred at very shallow depths, less than 10 kilometers.
According to data collected from over 10,000 questionnaires, the tremor was felt in central and eastern Andalusia, as well as in some towns in the Region of Murcia, southern Castilla-La Mancha, and even in the Community of Madrid. In the epicentral zone, non-structural damage and falling objects were reported in some buildings.
The institute explained that this seismic event is part of the Granada basin, within the central sector of the Eastern Betics, an area of high seismic activity and risk on the Iberian Peninsula. Historically, this region has experienced several significant destructive earthquakes, such as the one in 1884 in Arenas del Rey (intensity 9-10) and the one in 1431 south of Granada (intensity 8-9).
More recently, the seismic series recorded between December 2020 and August 2021 near the towns of Santa Fe and Atarfe, also in Granada, was highlighted. During that period, over 3,000 shallow earthquakes occurred, six of them with magnitudes between 4 and 5, the maximum being 4.5.
