Students from the IES Zoco in Cordoba and the IES La Soledad in Villafranca have taken part in an environmental awareness campaign at Benajarafe beach, within the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. The initiative is promoted by Europe Direct Cordoba, affiliated with the Youth Delegation of the Provincial Council, in collaboration with Europe Direct Malaga.
This activity is part of a European-level campaign aimed at raising awareness about the problem of marine litter. Following an informative talk, the more than 50 participating students from Cordoba carried out a beach cleanup.
The #EUBeachCleanup campaign organizes cleanup events on beaches, rivers, and lakes worldwide to combat the accumulation of waste. It is estimated that millions of tons of garbage end up in the ocean each year, with alarming projections for plastic quantities in the coming decades.
The initiative is supported by the European Union, specifically by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the External Action Service, in conjunction with the United Nations.
