Students, teachers, and administrative staff from the Sagrado Corazón School in Granada will participate this Wednesday, April 22, in a massive reading event. The goal is to set a new world record by simultaneously reading the beginning of the famous novel The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The initiative is part of the celebration of Book Day. Throughout the day, participants will come dressed as iconic characters from Tolkien's work, such as Aragorn, Frodo, Gandalf, or Galadriel. Additionally, all school facilities, including courtyards, classrooms, and hallways, will be transformed to recreate the atmosphere of Middle-earth, thanks to decorations prepared by parents and teachers.
“"We have been celebrating Book Day in a big way at our school for six years, and our experience shows us that when literature and cinema effectively dialogue in the classroom, students not only increase their reading habits but also develop better comprehension."
This activity is part of the commemorative events for the 120th anniversary of the school's founding, located on Paseo de los Basilios in Granada. With this event, the school also seeks to support Granada's bid to become the European Cultural Capital in 2031.
This year's Book Day program is entirely dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the cinematic release of The Lord of the Rings. The day will include a complete thematic setting, with the educational community dressed as elves, dwarves, hobbits, wizards, and orcs. There will also be a keynote lecture by an international expert on the author's work, a professor at the University of Granada (UGR) and consultant for the Amazon Studios series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Activities will begin at 9:00 AM with the reception of the educational community, families, and alumni. Interdisciplinary workshops based on Tolkien's work, storytelling sessions, a film forum for The Return of the King for ESO students, sports scavenger hunts set in Middle-earth, and an exhibition of replicas of objects and weapons from the film adaptations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings will also take place throughout the day.
