The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development announced the expansion following technical studies by the Andalusian Agency for Agricultural and Fisheries Management (AGAPA), which confirmed the viability of extending the areas for this traditional activity.
The new zones are distributed across three areas: 182,277 m² in the Longuera corrals (Cruz del Mar-Las Canteras beach), 254,670 m² in Camarón beach, and 85,000 m² in Montijo beach.
The same limitations as within the corrals will apply in these areas: exclusive use of traditional gear, catches for personal consumption only (not for sale), and adherence to minimum sizes, closed seasons, and quotas.
‘Jarife’ has expressed satisfaction, viewing the expansion as a regulation of a practice linked to Chipiona's history and heritage, allowing its members to engage in shore fishing in the influence areas under the established conditions.
The association, with 304 members, anticipates an increase in membership following the new regulation, which had previously halted new registrations. The ‘Jarife’ membership card, endorsed by the Chipiona City Council, serves as the enabling title for this activity.
‘Jarife’ plans to hold a meeting soon to detail the new regulations and their requirements to its members.
