Representatives from the Costa Tropical Recreational Fishermen's Association have met with authorities from Motril City Council to address the need for clear regulations concerning fishing activities along the Granada coastline. The meeting, held this Tuesday, focused on areas of particular interest such as Punta de la Mona and the ZEC Calahonda-Castell.
The group emphasized the importance of a management model that fosters consensus and the participation of all involved parties. The proposals presented for Punta de la Mona are largely considered applicable to the ZEC Calahonda-Castell, aiming for harmonization in regional regulations.
“"We seek dialogue and the participation of fishermen in the regulation processes."
The association has announced that it will continue with a series of institutional meetings, including engagements with the Calahonda Local Entity and the Castell de Ferro City Council. The objective is to prevent conflicts similar to those that have occurred in other areas of the Costa Tropical, promoting a framework for coexistence between environmental conservation and recreational fishing practices.
Among the measures suggested by the fishermen are the use of biodegradable materials, the replacement of lead weights with ecological alternatives, the regulation of minimum catch sizes, and the implementation of closed seasons. These initiatives have already been submitted to the Ministry of Environment in Seville, the Delegation of Environment in Granada, and Aula del Mar for evaluation.
During the meeting, the significant volume of recreational fishing activity in the area was highlighted, with approximately 2,300 people practicing it in Motril, over 25,000 in the province of Granada, and around 231,000 across Andalusia, underscoring the relevance of appropriate regulation.
