The intervention focuses on two key points: the breakwater itself, where excavation is underway next to the existing rock revetment and large stones are being prepared for placement, and the beach, where sand is being redistributed. These works are crucial after the intense storms that hit the Granada coast, leaving the breakwater damaged and part of the sandy area eroded.
The mayor of Motril, following a meeting with Costas technicians, detailed that the action includes repairing the breakwater's nose, reinstalling the luminous beacon that was swept away by the storm, and adding rock to reinforce the revetment in the Hoyo 19 area, extending towards El Espeto. Sand replenishment will also be carried out, collected from the Rambla de las Brujas to the breakwater.
“"We will closely monitor the work, which will pause on weekends so that users can enjoy the beach without problems. We hope this will be the definitive solution, regardless of whether other alternatives are sought, as this repair is designed for this stretch of beach, but the shoreline in front of the Impressive Hotel continues to suffer the effects."
The works, if no setbacks occur, are expected to be completed by June 13th, the date when the lifeguard service begins and the summer season officially kicks off. The municipal leadership has expressed hope that this intervention will be the definitive solution, while acknowledging the complexity of coastal dynamics.
The municipal official also addressed the skepticism of some residents regarding the effectiveness of these works, recalling that the coastal dynamics study considered the construction of more breakwaters in Motril. Although the original project was modified, the City Council submitted allegations, believing that a single 400-meter breakwater would not be sufficient. It is hoped that the current action will be effective, and if not, new alternatives will be sought after September.
The breakwater repair is part of the aid approved by the Government to mitigate damages caused by the storm front, with an investment of 2.9 million euros for actions across the entire Costa Tropical. The storms, with historical wave patterns, affected the maritime signaling beacon installed on the breakwater and dislodged parts of the infrastructure's nose, necessitating this intervention to reinforce the revetment and stabilize the sand.
