The Motril City Council has allocated more than 1.5 million euros in the last four years to the improvement of the Charca de Suárez Natural Reserve, culminating with the inauguration of a new Interpretation Center.

The Charca de Suárez Natural Reserve in Motril has received an investment exceeding 1.5 million euros over the past four years. This investment has enabled the addition of a new space dedicated to the management and conservation of natural resources, including a projection room.
The mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, accompanied by councilors José Balderas and Raquel Escámez, visited the reserve to inspect the new Charca de Suárez Interpretation Center, which complements the existing Visitor Reception Center.
The Charca de Suárez is a wetland of great ecological value and the last wetland area on the coast of Granada. It hosts over 200 species of fauna, mainly birds, and is internationally recognized as one of the few places in Europe with a stable population of the Moorish gallinule, a species critically endangered in Spain.
The Motril City Council has allocated nearly 1.5 million euros in the last four years for the improvement of the pond, equipping it with new infrastructure and facilities. The new Interpretation Center will feature a room for audiovisual projections, allowing visitors to learn about the natural richness and biodiversity of the enclave.
The mayor emphasized that this natural space is "a true pride for all the people of Motril," highlighting the importance of "continuing to invest with our own funds" and joining the efforts of the Junta de Andalucía to "care for one of the most important natural wonders of our autonomous community."
García Chamorro detailed that, in addition to municipal investments, European funds were used for the construction of the new Interpretation Center, new management offices, and furniture. She also announced an investment of nearly 30,000 euros from municipal reserves for the external repair of the charca and the hiring of new staff to keep the reserve open for most of the year.
The council considers it a priority to continue promoting actions to equip the Charca de Suárez Concerted Natural Reserve with new infrastructure, such as machinery, a video surveillance network, and the renovation of the perimeter fencing, in order to protect its inhabitants.
