The municipality of Torremolinos marked International Caregivers Day with an event that brought together the mayor, Margarita del Cid, the territorial delegate for Social Services, Families, and Equality in Malaga, Laura Valle, the councilor for Social Policies, Gloria Manoja, the professor of Cell Biology, Antonia Gutiérrez, members of the Municipal Corporation, and representatives from associations, collectives, and professionals.
Mayor Margarita del Cid emphasized the importance of recognizing the work of caregivers 365 days a year, not just on the designated day. "As mayor, I know that thanking you for your dedication commits us to listening to you and working for you," she stated, highlighting the responsibility of institutions to facilitate support and address the difficulties they face.
In Torremolinos, there are currently 735 dependent individuals receiving services from the Home Help Service. The mayor expressed her conviction that by working together, progress will be made to ensure no one has to face this path alone.
During the event, the manifesto 'Learning to Live' was read by Juan Carrasco, who was diagnosed with ALS almost six years ago. He shared his experience of learning to live with and manage the illness. A tribute video was also screened for professional and family caregivers, showcasing stories of resilience, care, and diversity.
The event also included a lecture titled 'Understanding Alzheimer's to Care Better: From Research to Therapies', delivered by Doctor Antonia Gutiérrez, Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Malaga and director of the NeuroAD Research Group.
