Mijas Demands Urgent Repair of A-7 Pedestrian Overpasses from Government

The City Council denounces the lack of maintenance and safety in 17 crossings, warning of falling debris and danger to pedestrians and vehicles.

Corroded and deteriorated pedestrian overpass handrail over the A-7 highway.

The Mijas City Council has reiterated its request to the Spanish Government for the urgent repair of the 17 pedestrian overpasses on the A-7 highway, due to their severe state of deterioration and lack of safety.

The Infrastructure Department of the Mijas City Council has sent multiple requests to the Ministry of Transport, without receiving a response to date, to address the corrosion of the handrails and anchors of the overpasses. These defects pose a clear risk not only to pedestrians who use these structures daily but also to vehicles circulating below, as material has been falling off.
The Mijas council cannot directly intervene in repairs as the ownership of the overpasses falls under the responsibility of the Spanish Government, which would expose the council to state sanctions if it were to undertake any action. The Councilor for Infrastructure, Juan José Torres, accompanied by the Councilor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez, visited several of these structures in La Cala to confirm the advanced deterioration.
Torres stated that "no type of conservation or maintenance is being carried out; we are talking about rusted handrails, paintwork that is not being touched up, and pieces of concrete that are falling off." He insisted that the responsibility lies entirely with the Ministry of Transport, which also "does not hesitate to fine the Mijas City Council if it decides to take action," therefore "we reiterate the urgency for them to intervene."
For his part, Gómez urged the Spanish Government to undertake these urgent works to guarantee safe access to the municipality's beaches. "Maintenance has been neglected for years, and now we fear that a simple repair will no longer be sufficient, and many sections of handrails that are completely corroded will have to be replaced," he warned.
