Torremolinos has joined the seventh edition of the Ecovidrio campaign #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, reaffirming its commitment to glass container recycling and the circular economy. The initiative aims to recognize the efforts of local hospitality businesses and the activism of coastal municipalities during the summer in proper waste management.
A total of 103 restaurants, bars, and beach bars in the town are actively participating in this campaign. Torremolinos will compete with 45 other municipalities in Andalusia and over 120 across Spain, aiming to win the Green Flag of Sustainability from Ecovidrio.
The Councilor for Environment and Circular Economy, Francisco Cerdán, thanked the participating hospitality establishments and highlighted a new feature this year: the municipality from each autonomous community with the highest score will receive an environmental awareness campaign to promote the circular economy.
This year, three hospitality establishments in Andalusia will also be recognized for their good environmental practices, evaluating aspects such as recycling management, energy and water consumption, and sustainable purchasing.
Nationally, over 120 municipalities and 12,000 establishments are joining the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes. Ecovidrio seeks to address the increase in glass container waste in coastal areas during the summer, a period when one-third of glass containers are consumed and the hospitality sector generates nearly 50% of single-use container waste.
To support selective glass container separation, Ecovidrio will install 200 new containers and provide 1,300 wheeled bins to participants. Additionally, environmental and circular economy training will be offered through nearly 100 environmental educators.
Thanks to this initiative, 14,600 tons of glass containers have been collected in Andalusia during this edition, preventing the emission of over 8,400 tons of CO2 and saving 10,400 MWh of energy.
