Work has begun on a new transport interchange in San Pedro Alcántara, which will house a bus station with a design abstractly modelled on a sardine espeto. The project, with an investment of €1.5 million, aims to provide the town with a modern and iconic image representative of the Costa del Sol.
The Town Hall has started clearing the 8,100-square-meter plot at the former ‘Cielo de San Pedro’, beside the junction of the A-7 and A-397 Ronda roads. The interchange will feature a 150-square-meter passenger building, six bus bays with waiting areas, taxi ranks, pedestrian links, and parking. More than 4,000 square meters of green space will be created.
San Pedro deputy mayor Javier Garcia explained that the design aims for a modern and representative image of the Costa del Sol. Site preparation works, including paving demolition and site cleaning, have a two-month timetable. The final execution project is due in July, with the tender expected between late this year and early next, and construction to be completed before the end of 2027.
Financing for the project is guaranteed, according to Garcia, who added that the station will improve mobility and boost San Pedro's growth northwards, linking up with new developments. The agreement with the regional Consejería de Fomento stipulates that the Town Hall prepares the plot, and the Junta will build, operate, and maintain the station.
