The initiative, led by a Marbella Local Police officer with 25 years of service, positions itself as an alternative to existing union organizations. Its promoters criticize that current unions operate with outdated methods, are overly politicized, and do not adequately defend the interests of agents or citizens.
The new union seeks a balance between the needs of the population and improvements for the Police, in order to provide a quality public service. Its leaders state that police unionism must be more critical to foster growth and warn about the dangers of politicization, which can lead to the imposition of a single way of thinking and a loss of direction.
“"The existing ones are still working with tools from the last century; they are very politicized and do not fight for the interest of the Police and the citizenry."
Regarding equipment, the union advocates for the combined use of long firearms and taser devices, whose implementation in Marbella has been successful. It is highlighted that agents carrying tasers receive extensive training, which is not always the case with firearms. Therefore, mandatory and continuous training, with shooting practices at least quarterly, is demanded for all agents.
Key demands include classifying the police profession as high-risk, which would entail better conditions in the event of a work accident. A professional reclassification is also requested so that police training courses equate to a specific and exclusive qualification for the Police.
The union warns about the increase in violence on the Costa del Sol since the pandemic and the inadequacy of the Penal Code to address it. Furthermore, it emphasizes the growing assumption of risky interventions by the Local Police, which is often the force with the most agents deployed in critical situations. It denounces the lack of personnel, with staffing levels stagnant for 15 years despite demographic growth and criminality, especially in tourist municipalities like Marbella. Therefore, the Government is urged to unblock the police replacement rate.
