The incident occurred around midnight when officers patrolling the Las Lagunas area, specifically on San Javier Street, were alerted by a resident. This witness saw an individual violently snatching a handbag from an elderly woman who was using a wheelchair.
According to the information gathered, the assailant struggled with the victim to take her belongings before fleeing down Verónica Street. While the woman received assistance from other neighbors, officers immediately launched a search operation with police support to locate the alleged perpetrator.
Minutes later, after a sweep of the area, the suspect was located near Verónica and Azucena streets. Upon noticing the police presence, he attempted to escape on foot but was intercepted by officers. During his identification and search, personal documents, health and bank cards, as well as other items allegedly stolen from the elderly woman, were seized.
The individual was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation. Before being handed over to the Guardia Civil for judicial proceedings, he was taken to a health center for the corresponding medical report. The victim, for her part, did not sustain serious injuries, and her daughter confirmed that the recovered items belonged to her.
This incident follows another recent event in Mijas, where a man was arrested weeks prior for attempting to sell a stolen scooter back to its owner. The Local Police received a call from a resident reporting extortion by an individual demanding money in exchange for returning his scooter, which had been stolen the previous day in Las Lagunas. The alleged thief was arrested for extortion and theft.
