The Torremolinos City Council, in collaboration with the Unicaja Foundation and the Meliá Costa del Sol Hotel, presents a new edition of the ‘Torremolinos y Gigantes’ cultural cycle. This event will bring together two prominent figures of Spanish culture: the renowned photographer Cristina García Rodero and the musician Depedro (artistic name of Jairo Zavala). The events will take place at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Center, offering an intimate format to explore their careers.
The first event is scheduled for September 3rd at 7:00 PM featuring Cristina García Rodero, a key figure in Spanish photography. Honored with the National Photography Award and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, she will review her career and present a commented projection of her work ‘España oculta’ (Hidden Spain). This project, initiated in 1973 with a grant from the Juan March Foundation, documents popular festivals, ceremonies, and traditions, culminating in the 1989 book of the same name, which earned her international recognition.
García Rodero's career also includes the National Photography Award in 1996 and a World Press Photo in the Art category. Since 2009, she has been a full member of the Magnum agency, being the first Spaniard to join this photographic cooperative. Her work has extended to countries such as Haiti and India, portraying both anonymous individuals and the current King and Queen of Spain.
The second encounter will be held on November 11th at 7:00 PM with Depedro. The musical project of Jairo Zavala is characterized by its openness to global influences. On this occasion, he will participate in a conversation and offer a brief acoustic concert.
Depedro's project began in 2008 with his first album recorded in Tucson, Arizona, alongside the American band Calexico, with whom he has collaborated as a guitarist. His music blends influences from Latin America, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the United States, reflected in an extensive discography including titles like ‘Nubes de papel’ (Paper Clouds) and ‘Érase una vez’ (Once Upon a Time). He has performed on five continents and collaborated with artists from various cultures.
The cycle, coordinated by journalist Alberto Gómez, is part of the cultural initiatives of the Torremolinos City Council. Previous participants in this cycle include figures such as Luz Casal, Imanol Arias, and Rosa Montero, among others.
