On September 7th, Fuengirola will illuminate the facade of the Town Hall and the Mare Nostrum roundabout in red to mark World Duchenne Disease Awareness Day.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness about this condition, which affects approximately one in every 5,000 children. The Councillor for Families, Equality, and Social Welfare, Cristina Bornao, and the representative of the association Duchenne Parent Project Fuengirola-Mijas, Sara Montagut, presented the event.
Bornao emphasized the collaboration with social groups to give visibility to rare diseases and the needs of those affected. Montagut, in turn, thanked the Fuengirola Town Hall for its support in raising awareness about this disease, which affects around 1,100 children in Spain.
The Duchenne Parent Project association comprises parents and relatives of children affected by the disease and operates internationally. In Spain, it has local groups like the one in Fuengirola and Mijas, whose volunteers work to raise awareness and support families.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare genetic disorder causing progressive muscle weakness. It is estimated that approximately 20,000 new cases are registered worldwide each year.
To contribute to its visibility, the Town Hall and the association invite residents to visit these illuminated points on the night of September 7th to help raise awareness.

"We invite all residents to join us that night, come to these spots, and take a photo with us to help raise visibility for this disease and the families living with it."

In addition to the illumination, Duchenne Parent Project Fuengirola-Mijas is organizing a charity padel tournament from October 23rd to 25th at the Club de Pádel Raquetas de Mijas. Proceeds will go towards research and treatment.

"I invite everyone to participate and collaborate with us. Every bit of help is important to continue advancing research and improving the quality of life for the children and their families."
