The Córdoba City Council has announced the inaugural edition of the May Crosses Contest specifically for Active Participation Centers for Seniors. This proposal aims to provide institutional recognition for the dedicated work these groups have consistently carried out over the years.
The initiative, which will feature its own jury to evaluate the creations, has been well-received, with 10 out of 14 existing centers participating. This competition addresses a long-standing demand from users, solidifying an activity that is already a deeply rooted tradition in these spaces.
The creation of these crosses is a process that spans several months, in some cases beginning even before Christmas. This meticulous work involves design planning, the arrangement of ornamental elements, and the crafting of every detail in workshops, fostering coexistence and teamwork among seniors.
A distinctive feature of these crosses is the predominant use of artificial flowers, handmade by the participants themselves. Unlike the city's traditional crosses, which typically use natural flowers, these centers value paper, fabric, or silk flowers, crafted by hand, reflecting months of effort and technique.
“"These are flowers with a special charm, very well made, and they reflect months of work."
The contest not only seeks to preserve tradition but also to promote active aging, stimulating functions such as memory and motor skills. The crosses will be open to the public on April 29, 30, and 31, with a jury comprising representatives from the Fair and Festival Delegation and the peñas movement. Citizens are invited to visit them starting May 1, in the afternoon, to appreciate these creations.
