Works to adapt the line between Algeciras and San Fernando de Henares for Railway Highway (AF) services will commence in September. These works, with an estimated duration of 14 months, will keep the rail connection between Córdoba and Jaén closed until November 2027, extending the period without passenger service to nearly two years.
The investment exceeds 345 million euros, with works focused on adapting the clearances of 34 tunnels, 104 overpasses, and 18 metal bridges. They also include infrastructure renewal in sections of the Córdoba-Linares stretch, which will benefit passenger traffic.
Since January 2026, passengers have been using road transport. The works affect municipalities such as Villa del Río, Andújar, and Espeluy, as well as Alcolea and the University Campus of Rabanales. The interruption is due to both repairs from storms and the planned works for the AF.
The intervention on the Córdoba-Jaén line focuses on adapting the clearance of 13 tunnels between Venta de Cárdenas (Ciudad Real) and Los Cansinos (Córdoba). Most of these tunnels are located in the province of Jaén, which is the most affected.
Renfe has prepared an alternative road transport plan for public service obligations. For freight trains, alternative routes have been established via lines such as Huelva-Zafra and Los Rosales-Zafra.
Adif is also reinforcing the infrastructure between Algeciras and Madrid, extending tracks at Andalusian stations such as Pedro Abad, Montilla, and Bobadilla. Work is underway on the signaling system and the renewal of the Bobadilla-Algeciras line.
The Railway Highway will initially operate with two round trips per day, expanding to three a year later. Approximately 360 trucks per day are expected to be moved by train, avoiding road transport.
