The Europe Day commemorations, coordinated by the provincial institution's Europe Direct office, took place this Friday at the Palacio de la Merced. The main objective of these initiatives is to promote the fundamental principles of the European Union, such as respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the Rule of Law, and the protection of fundamental rights.
“"It is about fostering the knowledge that young people in the province have of what Europe means to us, its importance in terms of funding, the values, and the possibilities that being part of the European Union offers us in terms of mobility, language exchange, or products, among others."
To achieve this awareness, a scavenger hunt with various educational games was organized on the esplanade of the provincial headquarters. Approximately 100 students from the third and fourth years of ESO from institutes in Córdoba and Castro del Río participated. The provincial delegate emphasized that the young people demonstrated their knowledge of the European Union and enjoyed an entertainment area with a photocall.
The Europe Day celebrations in the province of Córdoba extend from May 1st to May 15th, seeking to strengthen knowledge and a sense of belonging to the European Union among citizens. Scheduled activities include storytelling workshops, craft workshops, and interactive games.
In total, more than 120 activities are planned across 43 municipalities, with an estimated participation of over 10,000 people from educational centers, associations, and city councils. Additionally, Europe Direct has launched a drawing contest, open to all ages, which will conclude on May 31st and will raffle 10 suitcases among participants.
During Friday's event, awards were also presented to the 20 winners of the VI Europe in a Minute Speech Tournament, consisting of a 100-euro voucher for school supplies. Furthermore, the European Personality of the Month award was given to an astronaut and pilot, selected as an official Spanish candidate for the Space Class 2025 promotion by an American aerospace company.
To conclude the activities, the main entrance of the Palacio de la Merced hosted a flag-raising ceremony, the reading of a manifesto by the speech tournament winners, and the illumination of the main facade in the characteristic blue color of the European Union.
