The Ministry of Defense thus seeks to expand accommodation capacity for its personnel due to the current deficit at this strategic enclave. The company Imesapi S.A. will be responsible for the work, after receiving 20 offers in the tender. The Council of Ministers authorized the investment late last year, considering it a priority need justified by increased demand, limitations of existing infrastructure, and the rise in Armed Forces personnel.
Currently, the Navy has two logistics residences at the Base, 'Evaristo Díaz' and 'Dorna', with 29 and 21 rooms respectively. The new initiative also includes an expansion, as approximately 16% of requests at the Logistics Residence and over 40% at the Military Rest Residence are denied. Added to this is the need to house embarked personnel, an increase in volunteer reservists, and new operational facilities.
The arrival of the F-110 frigates in Rota, where they will be based, also gains weight in this decision. This will entail the construction of new hangars, armories, workshops, and the Digital Twin, implying an increase in Spanish navy personnel stationed at the military facility.
In addition to the residence, the Council of Ministers recently approved the acquisition of a simulation system for the Navy's Aircraft Flotilla (FLOAN), associated with the new NH-90 helicopter program, for 13 million euros. Simulation resources for the H135 helicopter are also being updated.
These investments reinforce the strategic importance of the Rota Base for Spain's defense. Projects associated with the NH90 helicopters and F-110 frigates are expected to be completed by 2030, including new hangars, service buildings, and modernization of warehouses. For the F-110s, a new fuel storage and distribution system will be implemented for nearly 40 million euros, along with land storage buildings.
The expansion of the docks will double the current berthing meters for Navy and NATO vessels, and will include the modernization of electrical, fuel, sanitation, and potable water systems, as well as new access roads.
For its part, the United States Navy also has significant investments underway in Rota, exceeding 205 million dollars for the next fiscal year, including a new hangar for its heavy aircraft, increased accommodation, and infrastructure improvements.
