The project, promoted by the Junta de Andalucía, primarily aims to ensure the structural stability of the altarpiece, halt active deterioration processes, and restore its visual and aesthetic unity. It includes thorough documentation of all interventions, ensuring the reversibility and compatibility of materials used, as well as improving preventive conservation conditions through environmental control protocols and specialized maintenance.
The reintegration of gilding will be carried out using the rigattino technique, employing metallic pigments that allow differentiation between additions and the original, thus respecting the work's historicity. The work is estimated to take approximately five months, covering everything from dismantling and packaging to structural consolidation, surface treatment, and final reassembly.
A preliminary technical analysis revealed that the deterioration of the ensemble is mainly due to the natural aging of materials. However, specific damages were identified, caused by a fire in August of the previous year and the subsequent partial collapse of the vault, which led to the detachment of elements later recovered during emergency efforts.
Detected pathologies include abrasions, impacts, warping, disassemblies, unstable joints, loose pieces, cracks, fissures, weak adhesives, micro-fissures, and corrosion in metallic elements of the structure and sculptures. The gilded surface shows generalized dirt, detachments, exfoliation, oxidized varnishes, gaps, risks of new detachments, wear, repainting, and lifting. Although no active biological pathologies were found, remnants of old infestations treated after the fire were present. Pictorial and sculptural elements show superficial dirt and localized losses of polychromy, and solar radiation incidence through damaged stained-glass windows has been detected, causing light and thermal fluctuations.
The Mezquita-Catedral of Córdoba, declared a National Monument in 1882 and a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC), is also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The altarpiece, as an intrinsic part of the property, is subject to regulations established by the Andalusian Historical Heritage Law and the Civil Code, requiring prior authorization for any intervention.
