The monumental heritage of Córdoba is expanding westward with an investment exceeding five million euros aimed at enhancing the complex of the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Royal Stables, and the Bishop's Garden.

The Córdoba City Council is driving an ambitious project to revitalize and expand the city's heritage core, extending its appeal beyond the Mezquita-Catedral and the Roman Bridge. The initiatives will focus on the western area, encompassing the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, Amador de los Ríos street, Camposanto de los Mártires, and the Royal Stables.
These improvements, totaling over five million euros in addition to previous investments, aim to significantly transform this historic area. The Alcázar, the city's second most visited monument, has already undergone facade and access enhancements. Currently, the Hall of Mosaics is undergoing roof restoration, and the Homage Tower is being addressed, works awarded to Rehabitec Almería for 530,000 euros, with completion expected in November.
In the northern area of the Alcázar, the upper garden, distinct from the one descending towards the avenue, is being recovered. These works, with a municipal investment of 545,528 euros and scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, aim to restore an old postern gate in the wall that will connect to the Royal Stables.
The Royal Stables, a Renaissance building acquired by the City Council from the Ministry of Defense for 5.2 million euros, will also receive significant upgrades. The project, managed by Serrot, includes space organization with plant islands and ergonomic benches, preservation of the medieval wall, and integration with the Alcázar. The establishment of the International Horse Center and a large museum hall on the first floor are planned, with an investment of 2.4 million euros for a 3,352 square meter space.
Another key project is the integration of the Bishop's Garden into Camposanto de los Mártires. The City Council will soon tender the architectural project's drafting, costing over 200,000 euros. The current wall separating two open areas will be removed, creating a unified space connecting Camposanto de los Mártires with Torrijos street. The Junta de Andalucía has ceded the space, formerly part of the Episcopal Palace.
The former Provincial Public Library, unused since its relocation, is also part of this renewal plan. Its use has been proposed for the Museum of Fine Arts, although transferring ownership to the State, which owns the building, remains a hurdle. This initiative seeks to enrich the city's cultural offerings, complementing more disruptive proposals like those at the C3A.
