A new incident of aggression against healthcare professionals took place this Thursday, April 9, at the Ciudad Expo health center in Mairena del Aljarafe. This event marks the third violent episode against doctors in the province of Seville in less than seven days, following incidents recorded in Lora del Río and Arahal. The Seville Medical Union (SMS) has publicly condemned the events and called for a protest rally.
According to the account of events, relatives of a patient with a prior appointment came to the Aljarafe health center. With an intimidating attitude and through direct threats, these individuals tried to pressure the doctor to prescribe a medication that was not medically justified. Although the healthcare professional clearly explained that the requested procedure for a vaccine prescription was not appropriate, the alleged aggressors escalated their hostile behavior.
Faced with the escalation of verbal violence and fearing greater reprisals, the doctor ended up issuing the prescription manually under duress.
Once the forced prescription was issued, the doctor ended the consultation and told the family members they could leave the healthcare facility. However, at that moment, one of the aggressors began to utter serious insults against the professional. The situation became so alarming that a colleague had to come to the consultation to assist the assaulted doctor, who ultimately suffered an anxiety attack and needed urgent attention.
After the episode, the doctor, victim of the aggression, immediately reported what happened to the center's management so that the official aggression protocol of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) could be activated. Two delegates from the Seville Medical Union appeared to advise the professional on the need and procedures for filing a formal complaint with the competent authorities.
The Ciudad Expo health center hosted a rally this Friday, April 10, at the doors of the healthcare facilities. During the protest, a manifesto against aggressions towards healthcare professionals was read, a problem that has significantly intensified recently in different parts of Andalusia.
