The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) convened a rally this Wednesday in the Plaza de la Constitución, joined by the City Council of Almería and the Provincial Council. The aim was to show support and solidarity with the people of Ceuta following the irregular entry of thousands of migrants on July 30th and 31st.
The mayoress of Almería, María del Mar Vázquez, and the president of the Provincial Council, José Antonio García Alcaina, read a manifesto from the FEMP. The text highlights support for Ceuta's residents, whose situation tests Spain's resources, border protection, and territorial integrity.
“"Ceuta and its citizens are facing extraordinary pressure that is testing their resources, public services, and capacity to maintain normality. But it is also testing Spain: our ability to protect our borders, ensure security, and defend the integrity of our territory."
Attendees, including institutional representatives and civil society members, repeated slogans of support, emphasizing that "Ceuta is not alone." The manifesto describes the events in Ceuta not as a migration problem, but as an "attack on sovereignty" affecting all of Spain.
Ceuta's example of serenity and solidarity was acknowledged, and the work of professionals and public servants managing the emergency was applauded. The manifesto calls on the Government of Spain to reinforce state resources in Ceuta, ensure border control, and provide the autonomous city with the necessary resources to restore its normality, activity, and confidence.
Furthermore, the Government is urged to expedite the return of those who entered the country illegally. The text concludes by advocating for coexistence based on respect, rejecting hatred and racism, and stating that "protecting Ceuta is protecting Spain."
