In response to a parliamentary inquiry from Vox, the Executive stated that the Administrator of Railway Infrastructure (Adif) is working to restore circulation. However, it only indicated that the reopening will occur "as soon as possible," without providing a concrete forecast.
This statement contrasts with the estimate Adif provided in early April, when it calculated that repairs for the damage caused by the storms, such as tracks buried in mud, collapsed embankments, and landslides, could be completed by August. The damage affects 116 kilometers of the track between Castellar de la Frontera and Almargen.
The recorded damages include ballast erosion, impact on the railway platform, blocked drainage ditches, broken drainage systems, ballast contamination from mudslides, and instability in several embankments. Flooding also affected track areas and safety installations.
Concurrently, the Government highlights an investment exceeding 500 million euros for the renovation of this line, which is part of the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors. In the last two months, over 125 million euros have been mobilized for investments pending execution.
Comprehensive platform and superstructure renovation works, as well as electrification, have already been completed in several sections. Additionally, electrification projects are being promoted, and a closure is planned for the Madrid-Algeciras section to adapt the line for the railway highway, tasks that have already been tendered and awarded.
