The individual, who started the blaze by burning two waste containers belonging to the regional company Arcgisa, was apprehended by the National Police on the Getares promenade after attempting to flee. During his arrest, he exhibited aggression and injured two officers, which was also taken into account in the sentence.
The final ruling acknowledges the defendant's admission of guilt. The flames originating from the containers rapidly spread to the park, affecting a significant area of its vegetation.
“"Although this is not a matter we can be satisfied with, we from the municipal Government team highly value this sentence, which demonstrates that the full weight of the law falls upon those who not only attack the environment but also endanger the lives of others."
The convicted individual, who has been in provisional prison since his arrest, must pay a total of 15,244.53 euros. Of this amount, 8,145 euros are allocated to the Algeciras City Council to cover the restoration costs of the affected park area.
The council member expressed gratitude for the intervention and collaboration of various entities in the process, including the Provincial Firefighters Consortium of Cádiz, the Local Police, the National Police, the judiciary, and the officials from the affected departments.
