The municipality of Santaella, in the Campiña Sur of Cordoba, has entered the final phase for the recovery and public opening of its historic Castle, a project that complements the regeneration of the Poniente Park. Both initiatives are part of the Integrated Action Plan (PAI) Conecta Campiña Sur and receive funding from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The Castle, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1985, is now at a crucial stage after decades of interventions. The total estimated investment for its enhancement amounts to 260,000 euros, a budget covering construction, preliminary archaeological studies, and project technical drafting.
The project outlines several phases, starting with a topographic survey and detailed planimetric documentation. Archaeological excavations in pending areas will be completed to shed light on the fortress's history. Subsequently, structural consolidation and restoration of deteriorated elements will be undertaken. Universal accessibility will be ensured with integrated railings and interpretive signage, adhering to the principle of 'minimum necessary intervention' to respect the monument's BIC status.
Project management is a collaboration between the Mancomunidad de Municipios Campiña Sur Cordobesa and the Santaella City Council. Environmental sustainability is prioritized, adhering to the principle of 'not causing significant harm to the environment' and minimizing the carbon footprint.
The Castle of Santaella, of Almohad origin, features an irregular layout with a prominent keep. Remains of towers, sections of wall, an armory courtyard, and two Islamic-era cisterns are preserved.
Concurrently, the Poniente Municipal Public Park will receive an investment of 100,000 euros for its regeneration. The goal is to restore this green space for public use, improving accessibility and safety, removing invasive vegetation, planting native drought-resistant species, and renewing urban furniture.
