Tension in PSOE Cádiz over Provincial Election Lists

The PSOE of Cádiz is experiencing significant internal tension due to disagreements in the formation of provincial lists for the upcoming Andalusian elections on May 17, with regional and provincial leadership at odds over the main candidate.

The socialist party in Cádiz is at a critical juncture, facing strong internal discord over the configuration of provincial candidacies for the Andalusian elections. On one side, the provincial general secretary, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, has proposed Juan Cornejo as the lead candidate. However, the PSOE-A candidate, María Jesús Montero, clearly favors Fernando López Gil for that position.
The Provincial Executive Committee of PSOE Cádiz already presented its candidate proposal, led by Juan Cornejo, followed by Rocío Arrabal and Fernando López Gil. Despite this initial proposal, Montero had hinted at the possibility of “some kind of adjustment” in the Cádiz list. Later, speaking to journalists in Cádiz, she assured that there would be no changes to the names, but possibly to their order, opening the door for a modification of the number one spot.

"There will be no changes to the names presented by the party's Provincial Executive, but there may be modifications to the order."

María Jesús Montero · PSOE-A Candidate
The significance of this potential change lies in the fact that Fernando López Gil has been a critical voice against Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix. Last year, López Gil supported Javier Ruiz Arana in the party primaries, a process that divided the party, and in which Ruiz Boix was re-elected by a narrow margin. Following his re-election, Ruiz Boix made moves that affected his opponents, such as the removal of Ana Carrera from the spokesperson position in the Cádiz Provincial Council, replaced by Javier Pizarro, who is aligned with Ruiz Boix.
If Juan Cornejo ultimately leads the list, it would represent a setback for María Jesús Montero. Conversely, if Fernando López Gil is chosen, the former Minister of Finance would have imposed her criteria, potentially creating an internal rift and strengthening critical voices against Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix. Sources suggest that Juan Cornejo would be willing to withdraw if he is not in the top position.
The provincial list for PSOE Cádiz for the May 17 elections is expected to be officially announced this afternoon. Sources consulted by this newspaper suggest that Fernando López Gil will be number one, although no scenario is yet ruled out. It is important to remember that lists must respect gender alternation, so Rocío Arrabal would occupy the second position.
Fernando López Gil has an extensive political career, having served as delegate of the Junta in Cádiz during Susana Díaz's government and as Patricia Cavada's right-hand man in the San Fernando City Council. Currently, he is responsible for Montero's campaign strategy for May 17, which explains the former minister's interest in his candidacy. Furthermore, López Gil would not look favorably upon occupying the third position, as some polls do not guarantee the PSOE three parliamentarians in the province, which could leave him out of Parliament.
Finally, the Steering Committee, composed of the general secretaries of the provincial groups of Andalusia, will be responsible for choosing the definitive lists. This body has the power to modify candidacies and even include new names, a possibility that María Jesús Montero has ruled out.
A notable absence from the PSOE lists is Irene García, former president of the Cádiz Provincial Council and number one in the 2022 elections. García, a critic of Ruiz Boix's management, has decided not to be part of the candidacies for the May 17 elections.
