The Teatro Pemán, a cultural landmark in Cádiz, will reopen its doors on August 20th after fifteen years of inactivity, bringing back an emblematic summer venue for the city.
After a long fifteen-year period marked by construction, deterioration, and waiting, the Teatro Pemán in Cádiz is preparing for its reopening. This historic summer theater, which never truly faded from the collective memory of the people of Cádiz, will once again host performances starting August 20th.
The inaugural series, titled 'From Cádiz for Cádiz,' aims to reaffirm the city's cultural identity. The Mayor of Cádiz, Bruno García, accompanied by municipal spokesperson Maite García Negroto, presented the event, emphasizing the importance of local artists leading the venue's recovery. "The city was very eager and excited to reclaim its summer theater," stated García, highlighting that the idea was for "Cádiz to be the one to recover it, with its cultural figures, and for them to be the main protagonists."
The Teatro Pemán is more than just a venue; it is a place imbued with sentimental memories for generations of Cádiz residents. During the presentation, artists and municipal officials recalled summer nights, open-air performances, and the close connection between the audience and the stage. Names such as Rocío Jurado, Isabel Pantoja, Paco de Lucía, and Joaquín Cortés were mentioned, all of whom left their mark on the venue.
“
"This place has always moved me, even more than the Falla. We had great nights here. I've been coming since the 80s and I remember that with 'Las 15 Piedras' we performed in Huelva and had to come here afterwards. We arrived an hour late and the entire theater waited for us until two in the morning. And with 'Las momias de güete' where I played guitar, I remember a sandwich fight where they threw them at us and we threw them back open, hitting them with mortadella slices in the face."
“
"It touched me deeply from my youth because I experienced things here, I experienced art. The sound of Paco de Lucía's Lucía still resonates, the concerts of La Pantoja, Rocío Jurado, those endless carnival nights with memorable coplas."
“
"I saw Joaquín Cortés for the first time here. It's one of the moments I remember from my childhood."
“
"This is a dream come true, an enormous honor. The first time I was here was in 1996, with my first teacher, Pili Ogalla."
The summer program will kick off on August 20th with a flamenco gala titled 'Cádiz, shore of flamenco,' led by David Palomar and the Ballet Flamenco de Cádiz. This will be followed on August 21st by the show 'Universo Cádi' by José Luis García Cossío (Selu), on August 22nd 'Guerrero' featuring Eduardo Guerrero and Pasión Vega, and on August 23rd Riki Rivera will present 'Un miedo menos. Terapia de grupo'.
Tickets will be priced at a single, popular rate of 20 euros per show, a decision made possible by the artists' efforts and their emotional connection to the venue. The City Council is finalizing the technical and adaptation details for the opening, scheduled for August 20th. The Teatro Pemán, with 1,152 seats, is located in the heart of the Parque Genovés, combining its sentimental value with a light, porticoed structure.
The reopening also brings back the name Pemán, which has been a subject of political debate but was never legally replaced since its designation in 1964. The theater's return symbolizes the recovery of a physical space and a shared memory in Cádiz.
