An innovative initiative, driven by the NGO Music For The Sea, has converted the ocean's hidden acoustic universe into musical pieces. The project utilizes real sound recordings captured by the underwater acoustics research team at the University of Cádiz's Institute for Marine Research (Inmar), led by researchers Neus Pérez and Alba Márquez.
The result is 'Tidal Shifts: Reimagine EP', a mini-album featuring four compositions created from real underwater soundscapes. Musicians and sound artists from various countries have collaborated to translate sounds, usually inaccessible to most people, into artistic works, fostering a new connection between science, art, and marine environment protection.
This project, coinciding with World Oceans Day, is part of a broader strategy to explore sound's potential as a tool for raising awareness. Under the slogan 'Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with our Ocean', international artists such as IDRA, OORA Music, Vito Gatto, Kazuya Nagaya, and Coco Francavilla are participating.
The initiative also has a charitable component: proceeds will support marine conservation projects, including Posidonia Soundscapes, backed by Unesco. Concurrently, researchers Alba Márquez and Neus Pérez have featured in an educational podcast discussing underwater acoustics and artificial intelligence.
