The decision, announced this Friday, alters the list previously approved by the socialist provincial executive. The main change places Fernando López Gil, councilor for San Fernando and Andalusian parliamentarian, as the head of the list. López Gil, who holds the number five position in Montero's regional executive, had initially been proposed for the third spot on the candidacy.
This modification has led to the displacement of Juan Cornejo, councilor for Medina Sidonia and head of Organization for the provincial executive, to the third position. However, Cornejo has firmly stated his resignation from the list, citing reasons of “coherence and dignity.”
“"For coherence and dignity, I will not be part of the PSOE Cádiz candidacy for the Andalusian Parliament if the changes are maintained."
Socialist sources present at the Regional List Commission, which met at the Parador Atlántico in Cádiz, indicated that Cornejo voted against the modification. He argued that the changes undermine what was voted on by the grassroots members in local assemblies and what was unanimously approved by the PSOE Cádiz provincial executive last Wednesday.
Despite his resignation, Cornejo has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the list and with the PSOE of Andalusia to support María Jesús Montero's candidacy for the presidency of the Junta de Andalucía, once the Cádiz candidacy is ratified by the Director Committee.
Juan Cornejo is the son of the historic socialist leader of the same name, who was a trusted figure for Susana Díaz during her leadership of the party in Andalusia. The modified candidacy, pending a final decision on Cornejo's position, would have Fernando López Gil (one), Rocío Arrabal (two), Juan Cornejo (three), Laura Álvarez (four), and Paco Ruiz Giráldez (five) in its top positions.
