The Cádiz City Council approved this Thursday, in an urgent motion, the withdrawal of honors for carnival author Juan Carlos Aragón. The decision revokes the concession of the star dedicated to the carnival artist and will request the school council to modify the school's name, which will now be called CEIP Adela del Moral, a former teacher and director at the center. The motion also calls for accountability from the previous government team for their alleged knowledge and silence regarding the convictions.
The decision comes after Juan Carlos Aragón's conviction for mistreatment of his former partner in 2010 became known. The current government team, led by mayor Bruno García, has criticized the attitude of the previous term, headed by José María González 'Kichi', accusing them of "covering up" the facts. Former Councilor for Festivals, Lola Cazalilla, acknowledged being aware of the events, while another former councilor, Laura Jiménez, reported on social media that they were prohibited from speaking and voting against the school bearing Juan Carlos Aragón's name.
The four points unanimously approved include reaffirming the municipal commitment against gender violence, ratifying the suspension of the tribute star and any other distinctions, urging the school to review its designation, and rejecting any conduct of silence or normalization in the face of gender violence. An amendment from the PSOE added the proposal to rename the center as CEIP Adela del Moral.
The most controversial point was related to "rejecting" the "silence and indifference of public officials from the previous government team." The PP and PSOE voted in favor of demanding accountability, while Adelante Izquierda Gaditana, the previous municipal government, abstained. Mayor Bruno García accused Adelante of knowing about the sentence and "covering it up," stating that the current government team's reaction is based on supporting the victim.
Adelante Izquierda Gaditana, through councilor Lorena Garrón, stated that the conviction was made public on Saturday and that they would not engage in polemics, although members of feminist associations present in the plenary session expressed their disagreement. The motion's spokesperson, David de la Cruz, acknowledged a possible "failure" and criticized the attacks on the previous government team.
The socialist spokesperson, Óscar Torres, emphasized the need for a radical stance against gender violence and asked the PP if they were certain that the previous government team was aware of the sentence.
