The Cádiz council has put an end to the matter after the current government, led by Bruno García, opened the file in 2024. The controversy surrounding the naming of the stadium, leased to Cádiz CF, has been a recurring issue since the Popular Party took office in 2023. This followed the previous administration, under José María González 'Kichi', naming it Nuevo Mirandilla through a vote deemed non-transparent.
A primary reason for abandoning the proposal to reinstate the name Carranza, a former mayor of Cádiz, was uncertainty regarding compliance with the Democratic Memory Law. The City Council was unclear whether the designation would contravene current legislation. Furthermore, Cádiz CF itself withdrew its proposal to name the stadium Carranza several months ago, weakening the municipal intention.
Municipal sources previously indicated that, upon receiving a letter from Cádiz CF requesting the removal of the Nuevo Mirandilla designation and proposing Estadio Carranza, the administrative process would commence, arguing that Carranza could be considered a commercial brand. However, Mayor Bruno García's priority has always been elsewhere, describing the stadium's name issue as "not a priority."
The municipal stadium will continue to be called Nuevo Mirandilla. Recently, the Cádiz club had introduced a new commercial naming, JP Financial, for matches and events organized by the team. However, this sponsorship proposal has received limited municipal backing to date, despite Cádiz CF's interest in its potential positive impact on the city's youth sports.
This situation contrasts with that of the Pemán Theater. Unlike the stadium, the building's name in Parque Genovés was never officially changed to Teatro del Parque, according to the opposition. Additionally, a court ruling supports the honors granted to the poet Pemán, clarifying that his designation is not linked to the glorification of the 1936 military uprising or the subsequent dictatorship.
