Cádiz CF has put an end to a disastrous season with another defeat, this time against Racing de Santander by a resounding 4-1. The match, played at El Sardinero, served as the culmination of a year marked by mediocrity and disappointment for the Cadiz fanbase.
From the outset, Racing took control of the game. Chances for the home side were not long in coming, and before the ten-minute mark, David Gil, the Cádiz goalkeeper, had already prevented an early decisive goal. Despite the yellow team's attempts to show a slight improvement, the difference in level with a Racing side already established in the top flight was evident.
The first goal came after a defensive error by Cádiz. A misplaced pass from Pelayo to Ortuño was intercepted by Canales, who put the hosts ahead. Shortly after, a clear opportunity to equalize, squandered by the young Argentine striker, highlighted the team's lack of finishing.
Racing's dominance translated into more goals. Around the half-hour mark, Arana scored the second after a play behind the Cadiz defense. Shortly after, the same Arana netted the third with a lob, effectively sealing the match and leaving Cádiz in a comical rather than a pathetic situation.
After halftime, Racing eased off the pressure, but Cádiz showed little reaction. Nevertheless, a goal from Álex Fernández, in what could be his farewell after nine years at the club, softened the scoreline. However, Racing definitively sealed the victory with a fourth goal from Iñigo Vicente.
The match also featured an emotional moment with the guard of honor that the Racing players gave to Álex Fernández upon his substitution. The game ended 4-1, leaving the image of a Cádiz side that, once again, bids farewell to the season leaving many doubts and the feeling of having been a 'joke'.
