This Friday, the Local Government Board will initially approve an urban planning agreement that will allow the San Fernando City Council to acquire 46,000 square meters of land belonging to the De la Flor family. These lands are essential for the future park project in Los Polvorines de Fadricas, in exchange for urban development rights in the future development of the area.
The agreement is fundamental to define the entire project area, as the park will not only cover the land acquired from Defense but also this area belonging to the reversionists, where up to six powder magazines are located. This environment, protected for its heritage value and affected by a public domain easement zone, is key to the park's development, which has funding from European EDIL funds.
In April 2024, the council formalized the purchase of 170,000 square meters from Defense for 428,631.47 euros, with the aim of creating a large green area between Caño Herrera and La Casería. This initiative was one of the main ones to obtain 11.9 million euros from European EDIL funds in October of last year.
The tender for drafting the project is expected in the coming weeks, once the draft specifications are reviewed. The goal is to transform the area into a large park with views of the Bay, integrating the 26 existing powder magazines, the walls, the pier, and the 18th-century breakwater. Each powder magazine could have a different use, such as an interpretation center, catering spaces, or cultural and leisure facilities.
The Fadricas area, spanning about 500,000 square meters, represents one of the most attractive areas in the Bay for the development of housing, sports, and economic facilities. However, this urban operation will be managed independently of the park's execution, which is the current priority for the island's City Council.
