Beach bars in Puerto Sherry face imminent closure after the Port Authority of the Bay of Cadiz (APBC) dismissed their appeal, potentially impacting around 300 jobs.

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Bay of Cadiz (APBC) has unanimously agreed to dismiss the appeal filed by Marina Puerto de Santa María S.A. against the denial of a provisional measure to maintain the activity of removable kiosks in Puerto Sherry. The decision, effective from July 7th, aligns with current regulations and the management of public port domain.
This resolution has caused significant concern among the managing companies, who have announced they will file a precautionary measure with the Court to justify the severe economic damage the closure would cause at the start of the season. If this measure is not granted, the four affected establishments (Playa Canalla, Phi-Phi, Blu, and Margarita) will be unable to open.
The businesses, which have operated with renewed permits for three years and were hoping for a temporary solution until September, cite pre-booked events and services for the summer, as well as employment contracts for approximately 300 people, mostly young individuals. They acknowledge making a "huge investment" to prepare for the season.
The companies are also aware of public criticism regarding 'botellones' (street drinking) and waste accumulation, but assert they implement measures such as noise limiters and extraordinary cleaning services. They state that if the precautionary measure is not admitted, they will cease operations on July 7th, deeming it 'reckless' to open without a license.
As an alternative plan, the entrepreneurs are considering organizing events at other venues they own. They look towards the future with the possibility of obtaining a new municipal license from September onwards to remain in Puerto Sherry.
The City Council has formally notified the establishments of the cessation of activity from 00:00 on July 6th, once the Port Authority's authorization expires. Both the City Council and the APBC will need to act within their respective competencies to ensure compliance with the resolution, which adheres to current regulations and the alignment of municipal authorizations with the public port domain status.
