After completing its XCVIII Training Cruise and returning to the Bay of Cadiz on July 31st, the sailing vessel has entered dry dock for maintenance and repair work. This annual stop is crucial to ensure the operational readiness of the ship, which sailed over 20,000 nautical miles on its last campaign.
The current works, which will last about four months, include deep cleaning of the hull, plate repairs, reinforcement welding, and the application of anti-corrosive treatments. The intervention also covers the inspection and maintenance of its four masts made of iron and noble wood, as well as the inspection of the standing rigging (steel cables) and kilometers of ropes.
Interior habitability works are critical, as the ship accommodates over 250 people. Midshipmen's cabins and rest areas are being remodeled, air conditioning ducts are being cleaned, and kitchen equipment is being renewed. Additionally, potable water tanks will be disinfected, and auxiliary machinery, the diesel engine, and the rudder will be serviced.
The main objective of these interventions is to certify the ship's structural safety for the demanding deployments of its centenary, celebrated between 1927 and 2027 and declared by the Government as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest. By mid-December 2026, the ship will undergo its mandatory sea trials.
The San Fernando City Council will present a cultural agenda with over 20 activities in September. March 2027 will mark the 100th anniversary of its launch in Cadiz. The XCIX Training Cruise will commence on January 10, 2027, from Cadiz, subsequently participating in the Velas Latinoamérica 2027 regatta and undertaking a special round-the-world voyage for its centenary in September 2027.
