The Chiclana City Council has renewed its 'Child-Friendly City' title awarded by UNICEF, a recognition underscoring the municipal commitment to the rights and well-being of minors.

The mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, presided over the ceremony for the placement of a commemorative plaque for the renewal of the 'Child-Friendly City' title, granted by UNICEF. He was accompanied by the delegate for Social Services and Childhood, Francis Salado, and representatives from the Local Council for Childhood and Adolescence. Chiclana renewed this commitment on February 18th, being one of the 28 municipalities in Andalusia to do so.
The mayor emphasized the importance of this plaque, especially after recalling the recent case of Sandra Peña, a young victim of school bullying. “This plaque is not just a seal, but a commitment to a protocol of respect for minors and a real commitment to their rights and freedoms,” he stated, adding that “episodes like Sandra Peña’s should not happen again, and for that, it is important to act and not hide.”
The ‘Child-Friendly Cities’ initiative values the commitment of local entities to improve their public policies from a child rights perspective, promoting the participation of children and adolescents in decision-making. These municipalities work to find solutions to their challenges, placing children and adolescents at the center of their policies.
To this end, participating municipalities have designed childhood plans that address local challenges in realizing the rights recognized by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). They also have real participation spaces where their proposals are heard, enriching political management by considering the opinions and needs of the policy recipients themselves.
